What clothes will we need? Suggested clothing and shoes for Etna Excursions
Find out what clothes and shoes to pack for your Etna excursion, with seasonal recommendations for standard tours and high-altitude summit treks.
Dressing appropriately for your Etna excursion is essential for both comfort and safety. Mount Etna's weather can change rapidly at any time of year, and temperatures drop significantly with altitude. Below you will find our seasonal clothing recommendations divided by tour type.
Recommended Clothing — All Tours (excluding Top Crater Tour and Etna Summit Trekking)
These guidelines apply to our standard excursions that do not reach the highest summit areas.
| Season / Period | Recommended Clothing & Footwear |
|---|---|
| November – March | Winter jacket, long trousers, warm hat, and sturdy waterproof shoes. Snow and freezing temperatures are common, so warm, waterproof layers are a must. |
| April – May | Layered winter clothing and trainers. Conditions can change quickly — a mild morning can turn cold and windy by midday, so packing multiple layers you can add or remove is strongly advised. |
| June – September | T-shirt, trousers or shorts, and sneakers. Weather is generally pleasant at lower elevations. Always carry a light jacket in case of unexpected wind or a brief drop in temperature. |
| October | Multi-layered winter clothing and trainers. Autumn weather on Etna is highly variable — warm sunny spells can alternate with cold, wet conditions within the same day. |
Recommended Clothing — Top Crater Tour & Etna Summit Trekking
These high-altitude tours reach elevations above 3,000 m (approx. 9,800 ft). Conditions at the summit are considerably harsher than at lower levels, regardless of the season. Proper trekking footwear and wind-resistant outerwear are mandatory for these tours.
| Season / Period | Recommended Clothing & Footwear |
|---|---|
| November – March | Winter jacket, long trousers, warm hat, and sturdy waterproof shoes. The summit is frequently snow-covered and subject to sub-zero temperatures and strong winds. |
| April – May | Multi-layered winter clothing and sturdy trekking shoes. Snow patches may still be present at the top, and temperatures can be well below those at the base. Layering allows you to adapt as conditions change during the trek. |
| June – September | Windbreaker, long trousers, and trekking shoes. Even during summer, the summit area can be cold and windy. Avoid shorts or light footwear — the volcanic terrain is rough and the temperature difference between the base and the crater rim can exceed 10–15 °C. |
| October | Winter jacket, long trousers, warm hat, gloves, and sturdy trekking shoes. Autumn storms can arrive with little warning at altitude, making full winter gear essential. |
General Tips for All Tours
- Footwear: Closed-toe shoes with a good grip are always preferable. Sandals, flip-flops, and heeled shoes are not suitable for any Etna excursion.
- Sun protection: At higher altitudes UV exposure is stronger. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat or cap are recommended even on overcast days during summer months.
- Backpack: A small daypack is useful for carrying extra layers, water, and snacks — especially on trekking tours.
- Weather check: Always check the local weather forecast before your tour. Our guides will inform you of any significant changes on the day of your excursion.
- Children: Younger participants feel the cold more quickly — consider adding an extra layer compared to adult recommendations.
When in doubt, dress warmer than you think necessary. It is always easier to remove a layer than to wish you had brought one.
